Peter E. Friedell, M.D. -- President

Peter E. Friedell, M. D, has served the Chicago area medical community for over a quarter of a century. In various positions, both clinical and administrative, Doctor Friedell has contributed to the quality and availability of health care for patients while ensuring the financial stability of several health care related entities.

Graduating with honors from the Chicago Medical School, Peter Friedell continued his medical training doing an Internship at the Albert Einstein Medical Center and a Residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. Doctor Friedell then achieved the unique distinction of becoming triple Board Certified, with advanced training in Internal Medicine (1972), Hematology (1974), and Oncology (1977). Doctor Friedell served as a Captain in the Medical Corp of the United States Army Reserve.

Although now retired from an active, full time practice in Internal Medicine, Doctor Friedell serves in many capacities as a Senior Attending physician on staff at Jackson Park Hospital , Chicago, Illinois. These positions include Co-Chairman of the Department of Medicine (1974-2000), Medical Director (1979-1999), Chairman of the Quality Assurance Committee, Chairman of the Credentials Committee, and Chairman of the Cancer Committee and Tumor Board Conference.

In 1984, Doctor Friedell assumed the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of Jackson Park Hospital. In 1995, Doctor Friedell was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of Jackson Park Hospital Foundation. Under his leadership, the hospital expanded its health care services to include:
  • Development of the only Radiation Therapy Unit in Chicago south of the University of Chicago
  • Expansion of Renal dialysis to a census of 96 patients per week
  • Expansion of Psychiatric Unit from 10 to 86 beds
  • Development of fully accredited Family Practice Residency Program with 15 Residents
  • Opening of American Diabetes Association certified Diabetes Education Center
Remarkably, while expanding health care services to an underserved and underfunded community, Doctor Friedell maintained the independence and fiscal integrity of Jackson Park Hospital, finding new sources of funding, maintaining Jackson Park not only as a health care provider but as one of the major employers on Chicago's southeast side. While other hospitals throughout the Chicago area closed or were acquired by for- profit chains, Doctor Friedell ensured that Jackson Park Hospital's mission to serve the community remained a reality. In 1999, Doctor Friedell achieved the highest peer honor, being named Physician of the Year at Jackson Park Hospital.

Retiring as President and CEO of Jackson Park Hospital in 2002 to pursue other interests, Doctor Friedell re-assumed the position of Hospital Chief Executive Officer in 2004. Since that time, the hospital has shown an increase in patient census and a return to profitability, while maintaining the highest level of quality health care. Accomplishments during this time include: implementation of a federal grant for HIV infrastructure; restructuring of the hospital's insurance program and obtaining a significant increase in funding from State agencies.

In addition, Doctor Friedell continues his stewardship of Jackson Park as founder and Chairman of the Foundation for Jackson Park Hospital, the fund-raising Board for the hospital.

Various not-for-profit organizations have relied upon Doctor Friedell's guidance for their mission and continued growth, including such esteemed organizations as The Chicago Society of Internal Medicine ( President), Society of Medical History of Chicago, (Trustee and Secretary/Treasurer 1974-1980), various leadership positions with the Chicago Medical Society (Southeastern Branch President, 1984-86), and the Illinois Cancer Council (Board of Directors, 1981-89). In addition, Doctor Friedell maintains working relationships with such local health care entities as the Cook County Bureau of Health Services. This relationship has included health screening programs which, in just a short time, have identified potentially life threatening illnesses affording patients the opportunity to take advantage of early intervention and receive appropriate medical care.

Two institutions in particular have been a significant part of Doctor Friedell's commitment to the community: The Hektoen Institute and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

As Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hektoen Institute, Doctor Friedell has expanded research programs from 3 million to 30 million dollars annually over a 10 year period.

Just as he has been committed to providing health care to all, regardless of ability to pay, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Anti-Defamation League, Doctor Friedell has a proven track record of standing up for the fair and civil treatment of all people in our society, regardless of race, religion, or political belief.

Doctor Friedell's business interests have been varied, revealing an entrepreneurial side to his reputation for clinical excellence. As a founder of Health Management Services, Inc., Friedell Consulting, LLC, and Friedell Management, LLC, Peter Friedell and his management team have been providing consulting services to the health care industry, turning unprofitable entities into examples of quality and financial stability and adding a new line of health care services.

Commitment to patient care, fiscal integrity, research, and community service have been the essence of the career of Doctor Peter E. Friedell.
