Rossana Barrera-Saavedra -- Community Relations

Rossana Barrera-Saavedra's professional life has been devoted to community service, particularly areas involving women's and minority population groups' access to quality health care. In Ms. Barrera's own words, her passion is to improve the quality of life for these and other communities. Ms. Barrera earned her medical degree in 1985 and her Masters in Public Health in 1992. In 2004, Ms. Barrera received her Masters in Business Administration. With her educational background and history of professional accomplishments, Rossana Barrera is uniquely qualified to address health care issues from all aspects; clinical, administrative, financial, developmental, and as a matter of public policy.

Ms. Barrera brings to Health Management Services a wide scope of professional accomplishments, including internal positions of responsibility running Ambulatory Care Services at Norwegian American Hospital and serving as Director of the Women's Health Center at Norwegian. A former Board member of the Illinois Maternal and Health Coalition, Ms. Barrera's commitment to the health and welfare of expectant mothers has been unwavering. In 1999, Ms. Barrera achieved the honor of being awarded the Public Health Leadership Award and is a member of the International Childbirth Educators Association. In addition to serving as Director of Community Relations for Health Management Services, Inc. , Ms. Barrera serves on the Health Advisory Board of El Valor and the Latino Advisory Committee of the Chicago Chapter of the March of Dimes. Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago requested Ms. Barrera's services to direct its efforts to ensure appropriate and timely billing of its physician and hospital based services.

Working with the Grants Department at The Hektoen Institute, Ms. Barrera has been a key player in the awarding of several significant grants to enhance patient care at Jackson Park Hospital, including a grant for HIV infrasturcture, March of Dimes for pre natal education, and a grant to establish a Dula program.

Ms. Barrera's bilingual skills have served her and the community well, in both the spoken and written word. She has conducted research studies and focus groups for the Hispanic community, presented papers in English and Spanish to several national organizations, including the American Public Health Association national convention in Washington, D. C. Her publications include "Qualitative Research with Understudied Population: In - Depth Interviews with Women of Mexican Descent", published in the Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Science.

Ms. Barrera currently serves as manager of the PEF Clinics medical practices in addition to her consulting services.
